Projekt Utracone grupy artystycznej The Prezent czerpie inspirację z 56 obrazów wydobytych z archiwów polskich muzeów i dóbr ziemskich – artefaktów skradzionych lub zagubionych podczas II wojny światowej. Inspiracją cyklu jest nie tylko sam obraz, ale także jego historia, w tym proces jego zniknięcia i ponownego odkrycia w pamięci zbiorowej. Praca ta splata narrację tworzenia i niszczenia ukazując utracone obrazy, tylko po to, by znowu je zmazać, otwierając drogę dla kolejnego procesu, który jest również metaforą cykliczności życia.
Dzięki współpracy czterech międzynarodowych artystek, Utracone uznaje fakt utraty tych dzieł, jednocześnie podkreślając niezwykłą zdolność sztuki do zapamiętywania, reprezentowania i transformowania kultury. W trakcie trwania wystawy artyści będą prowadzić warsztaty malarskie w galerii, zorganizują publiczny panel dyskusyjny, a także zostawią małe obrazy jako prezenty w miejscach publicznych w całym mieście w ramach swojej misji poszukiwania alternatywnych sposobów obiegu malarstwa w społeczeństwie i celebrowania regeneracyjnej zdolności sztuki.
Looted draws inspiration from 56 paintings unearthed in the archives of Polish museums and estates—artifacts stolen or misplaced during World War II. The source of inspiration for this work lies not solely in the paintings themselves but also in their storied past—the mystery of their vanishing and their subsequent resurrection within the collective memory. Made by the collaborative efforts of four international women artists working together under the name The Prezent, the work weaves a narrative of creation and destruction as it re-presents these lost paintings, only to wipe them away again, clearing the way for the next process.
Looted acknowledges the disappearance and loss of these works while simultaneously highlighting art’s extraordinary ability to remember, re-present, and transform culture. The dual act of painting and erasing invites viewers to reflect on the myriad possibilities of art to form, dissolve, and re-form across time. By emphasizing the intrinsic value of these creative gestures, Looted posits that creativity is humanity’s greatest gift, a driving force in our shared history’s continuous evolution.
Galeria Podbrzezie’s history as a Jewish craft school and present-day Pedagogical University offers a resonant context for The Prezent’s commitment to community engagement and art education. During the course of the exhibition, the artists will offer painting workshops in the gallery, hold a public panel discussion, and leave small paintings as gifts in public places throughout the city as part of their mission to find alternative ways for painting to circulate in society and to celebrate art’s regenerative capacity.
